Post Furniture for Small Spaces.... opinions and thoughts wanted please.

Hi! I am a design student currently designing functional furniture for small spaces and I was wondering whether any one could share some information with me to help me along with my research. If you could answer any of these questions it would be much appreciated.

1) If you have a small living room/lounge room do you find that your furniture takes up to much space? what would you change about your furniture to make the room feel bigger?

2) What type of problems occur where you need more space/extra furniture in the living room. For example having friends around and there is not enough room for every one to sit down. Can you think of anything that would solve these problems?

3) What do you think about multi functional furniture. e.g: integrated storage, adjustable sizes?

4) Is there anything you would like to see integrated into a piece of furniture that hasn't been done yet?

5) And finally! any general opinions on how you feel about living in a small space (if you do) The problems you have had, whether you enjoyed it, what furniture does or doesn't work for you.

Thanks for taking the time to read, feel free to write anything about the topic!

Beth.

Hello Beth,
I live in a condo, so consider me an expert on small space decor! It's fun because it's a call to think outside of the space box to make every square inch a design decision.

I wrote an article for a web site the other week, though I can't copy it word for word, I'll give you a few of the tips...

Think "Double Duty" - Here are some examples.

An automen, for example, that has hidden storage space AND a turn over top that could double as a cocktail or end table. I actually just bought one at Bed Bath and Beyond myself - it's perfect for my 12' by 14' den.

Replace a solid, space closing door, with a wood framed french or glass one. It opens up a room while still providing some noise privacy...room doubles as a guest room? Attach a removable curtain rod to the door.

Double up that home office to be a guest bedroom. There are some amazing wall units, commercially known as Murphy Beds that will be a very nice desk unit by day, and a welcoming bed for guests by night.

Create "The Illusion Of Space" - Use mirrors to brighten up a dark room while create the appearance of a larger space. Place it across from a window to pull in and reflect light. Another fun idea is to make a smaller accent wall a wall entirely of mirrors. The deception of space is amazing! A word of warning though, it can be overwhelming so choose a wall carefully. Place mirrors in the back of a book shelf or behind a wall shelf accent.

Finally, and most importantly - keep that small space uncluttered. A few things left randomly around a small room will make it look messy, while those same few things in a large room won't be noticed...it's a bummer but it's true.

So, to beat the small space clutter challenge - use the "Law of Flat Surfaces". Simply, clear off all your horizontal surfaces by doing a quick clean up every day. Including the floor.

Decorating for small spaces will always present unique challenges. Along with those challenges is an unconventional opportunity to develop one of a kind design solutions.

Traditional shapes and sizes don't always work but with a little research, shopping and possibly professional consultation - that small space will make a large impression.

Good Luck Beth!

Most living rooms need to be multi-functional and have enough seating to comfortably fit the entire family plus company. This is easy to do if your living room is large. However, many people have living rooms that are not large, especially if you live in a condo or apartment. Luckily, there are some specific things you can do to decorate a small living room that will make it seem bigger.

1) If you have a small living room/lounge room do you find that your furniture takes up to much space? what would you change about your furniture to make the room feel bigger?==> I'll be pulling out all the furniture that would make the room smaller, and replace it with the furniture that would make it look bigger.

2) What type of problems occur where you need more space/extra furniture in the living room. For example having friends around and there is not enough room for every one to sit down. Can you think of anything that would solve these problems?==> I would bring them outside my house, which do have a lot more space to accommodate my visitors

3) What do you think about multi functional furniture. e.g: integrated storage, adjustable sizes? ==> no idea.

4) Is there anything you would like to see integrated into a piece of furniture that hasn't been done yet?

5) And finally! any general opinions on how you feel about living in a small space (if you do) The problems you have had, whether you enjoyed it, what furniture does or doesn't work for you.

Hi

When it comes to choosing furniture for small spaces it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to fall into the same old routine of purchasing items that look good in the show room instead of what you actually need and what is appropriate for your small space. Here are a few do’s to keep in mind before you start turning your cramped spaces into cozy rooms. One more thing…. Remember to take the tape measure when you go shopping!

1. Keep furniture low to the ground and choose furniture with legs as this allows for extra storage underneath. Be sure to keep the pieces in proportion to one another and keep the lines straight and simple.

2. Choose two or three large low profile pieces rather than a bunch of small pieces. Small pieces tend to make the room look cluttered. The space is broken up too much and the eye gets confused when bouncing around from piece to piece. Large pieces allow the eye to move slowing across the room which gives a more spacious feeling.

3. It is best to keep a monochromatic color scheme when choosing upholstery fabric for furniture for small spaces. If you’re not in a financial position to purchase new furniture use slipcovers.

Thanks
