Once again thanks for your post.
Finding a good tiler, builder, plasterer or even a forum is like having a go on the lottery other than the odds might differ, there is a site called Place4Trades, find a tradesman, tiler, tilers, plumber, plumbers, in the UK that I know have some good professionals and if you are a true professional you can advertise there, but if they get bad comments about you or your business you will be removed.

Hope this helps you in your hunt for a tradesperson.

You can't beat a personal recommendation from a friend or neighbour.

Could you tell by a yellow pages whether or not they are good. Some adverts look good don't they? Nicey logos and plenty of trade logos on some ads makes me feel as they've got some cleverness in them.
How do people become a tile tradesman and then are there some standards they need to work to like a Corgi thing but for tile?

No, I dont believe you can tell just from an advert. Some dont even have a landline number. When I go out and quote, I take my portfolio that includes photographs and written customer recommendations/comments. A professional tiler should work to BS 5385. Ask one and see if you get a blank look or some er er er erms!

BS5385 is the code of practice for the installation of tiles (in a nutshell). There are five parts dealing with walls, floors, external, special cases (such as wet rooms, hygenic areas) and natural stone.

Unfortunately there are some people out there who think that the standards can be ignored if it suits them (i.e. not waiting the drying out period for newly plastered walls, ignoring weight limits etc)
